COLP had two simultaneous information booths in June. One was held at the Pride Festival and the other at Claude's Gun Show. Many people expressed support for ballot access reform in Oklahoma and received free pocket Constitutions.
Resolutions Adopted:
Vote NO Sept. 13 - COLP opposes SQ 723, which seeks to raise gas taxes. Pro-tax advocates have already spent nearly one million dollars trying to push their tax hike on Oklahomans. Oklahoma Taxpayers United is a group working to fight this tax increase. Visit www.oktaxpayers.org.
Support Medical Marijuana Interim Study - COLP supports an Interim Study on Medical Marijuana. Standing up for compassion, Rep. Bill Nations has submitted a request for an interim study in the Oklahoma House of Representatives to investigate the benefits of medical marijuana. We urge Speaker of the House Todd Hiett to support Interim Study 58 and Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Morgan to support a similar interim study in the Senate. More information at the Compassionate Care Campaign's website: www.okmedicalmarijuana.org
COLP thanks its outgoing Chairman - Tom Laurent was thanked for his untiring support of COLP and Libertarian ideas.
May 10th, 2005 Central Oklahoma Libertarian Meeting Announcement
The Central Oklahoma Libertarians will meet for dinner and their monthly get-together Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 PM. They meet at Chen's Buffet at NW 23rd and Meridian in Oklahoma City. Tim Gillespie of Citizens for a Sound Economy will speak about efforts to stop the Specter Asbestos Tax.Citizens for a Sound Economy says: "Aggressive trial lawyers continue to cash in on asbestos lawsuits, bankrupting American businesses and siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars that would be better used to compensate victims of asbestos-related illness...Congress needs to fix the problem. Unfortunately, Senator Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) is pushing "trust fund" legislation that would make matters worse by creating a new $140 billion federal-government program to pay out asbestos claims. This staggering level of funding would come from a new business tax, levied on many companies that are only remotely related to asbestos. The ultimate effect will be lost jobs and a weaker economy, and taxpayers will surely be on the hook for any shortfall in the trust fund."
Instead, Citizens for a Sound Economy believes Congress should enact tort reform that bars abusive lawsuits and allows valid claims to proceed by focusing on medical criteria. Citizens for a Sound Economy is on the web at www.cse.org.
