Oklahoma Libertarian Party Legislative Agenda
The Libertarian Party supports Individual Liberty and Personal Responsibility.
Libertarians believe the answer to America's political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned America its greatness: a free-market economy and the abundance and prosperity it brings; a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom that marks this country above all others; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America's founders.
Protect Private Property
We oppose local governments using eminent domain to seize and transfer private property in the pursuit of more taxes. We support SQ 729, the Protect Our Homes initiative.
Respect the Second Amendment
Recognizing the second amendment of the Constitution as not merely a firearms law, but in fact an expression of the basic human right to self-defense, we oppose all laws infringing upon this right and support a Vermont style concealed carry law.
Limit Growth in Government Spending
We support reasonable limits on growth in state spending and so support SQ 726, the Stop Overspending initiative. We believe government should prioritize within a budget, just as families and businesses must.
End Corporate Welfare
We oppose grants of relief or exemption to taxation specifically designed to benefit particular politically favored businesses or individuals.
Educational Tax Credit
Libertarians would enact a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for any individual (or company) who pays for a child's education.
Empower, Don't Weaken, Juries
In all jury trials, jurors should be allowed to judge the evidence of the prosecution and the pleading of the defense without judicial restraint, and with judicial advisement of such right required. They should have the duty to judge morality of the law as it applies to the case before them. Furthermore, we oppose 'tort reform' interfering with the rights of juries.
Judicial Accountability and Integrity
Judges often not only fail to properly inform jurors of their rights, but also frequently engage in other misconduct. Therefore we call for enacting legislation to ensure judicial accountability and integrity by placing the power to review and adjudicate complaints against state and local judges in the hands of an independent special grand jury.
End Tattoo Prohibition
The Oklahoma Libertarian Party supported passage of SB 806, which recently ended prohibition of tattooing in our state. Oklahoma was the last state to ban tattoos, creating a dangerous black market.
Don't create Black Market in Tobacco
Additional taxation of cigarettes enables waste, inefficiency, and corruption in state government to continue, while at the same time causing more crime and endangering children by creating a black market in tobacco. Therefore, the Oklahoma Libertarian Party opposed the tobacco tax increase and opposes additional cigarette taxes.
Medical Marijuana
Any person who has been prescribed, by a qualified medical practitioner, cannabis or marijuana as treatment for any ailment, may grow a sufficient number of plants for their own use.
Privatize Marriage
Government licensing of marriage has caused increasing interference with the institution by politicians and bureaucrats. By use of inducements and penalties in the tax code, regulations of employment benefits, and other means, the relationships and decisions of individuals are micromanaged by elected officials. The Oklahoma Libertarian Party opposes such social planning, including additional regulation or definition of marriage, and calls for complete removal of government from the marriage business.
Faith Based Initiatives
We oppose so called faith based initiatives and support honoring the Constitutional provision against government establishment of religion.
No Birth Certificate Fraud
The Oklahoma Libertarian Party opposes fraud, even and especially legalized fraud, and therefore opposes any bill which would allow incorrect information to be deliberately recorded on original birth certificates.
